Positive Behavioral Strategies and Teaching Nonverbal Children to Read

Penny Zindt is a counselor contracted through the Washington State Division of Developmental Disabilities providing behavioral support strategies for families. She will provide tips for guiding ASD children in a positive manner to address challenging behaviors and share her special reading program for teaching individuals with and without verbal communication skills.

When Penny Zindt's son Alex was 6 years old he had very little understandable speech, was unable to follow a 2-step direction, had many self stimulatory and avoidance behaviors and was unable to read or write.

Deteremined to help their son, the Zindts traveled to The Institutes For Achievement in Human Potential in Pennsylvania and began a six-year, home-based program of therapy and schooling with Alex that included a demanding physical program, sensory therapy, behavior modification and
schooling.

Today, Alex at age 29 works and has his own apartment with his support staff. He has a girlfriend and loves to go to dances, bowling and golfing lessons! He also enjoys writing stories.
